The 89-year-old man was stranded for half an hour before he was able to be pulled out of the canal and put back on dry land. Members of the public called emergency services after spotting the pensioner struggling along a stretch of the Nottingham Canal near Cossall, Nottinghamshire on Thursday afternoon.
Police, fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene to find that the scooter had fortunately landed upright in the canal.
Firefighters then helped the man, who was fortunately not injured, from the water before taking him to hospital for a check up.
Sergeant Keith Parkes, of Nottinghamshire Police, who attended the scene, said: “Clearly we were extremely concerned for this gentleman’s welfare and devoted significant resources to finding him as quickly as possible.
“Thanks to some excellent joint working form all three emergency services he was soon located and rescued from the canal.
“Luckily, he landed in a standing position and was not seriously injured during his ordeal. I am sure I speak for everyone involved when I send him our very best wishes for the future.”
Simon Lilley, Incident Commander of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, is grateful that “tragic consequences” were avoided thanks to the public acting quickly to call the incident in.
He added: “This incident could have had tragic consequences.
“He’d been in the water for half an hour before, luckily, two passers-by came across him and called it in, so we’d like to thank them.

“Thankfully, the gentleman was uninjured. This was largely due to the swift action of the different emergency services and the ability we have to work together.
“Only the day before, NFRS ran a large water rescue exercise with some of our partner agencies to make sure we keep on top of the skills needed for such incidents.”
Wendy Bainbridge, ambulance operations manager for the Nottinghamshire division of East Midlands Ambulance Service, praised her colleagues for their quick response and resolution of the issue.
She said: “It is always a pleasure to work alongside our colleagues from the other blue light services to ensure the health and wellbeing of our patient. We are pleased to hear that it was a positive outcome for the gentleman and that following an initial assessment on scene, he was able to recover in the comfort of his own home.”
