Self-employed & worker differences blur as ‘better safety nets’ are needed for freelancers | Personal Finance | Finance
Collective Benefits, the London-based start-up dedicated to “solve the protection gap” for self-employed and independent workers, analysed the data and found the line between “self-employed” and “worker” has become increasingly “blurred”.
This was based on examination of specific points within the ONS data, with more than 850,000 adults being on zero-hour contracts in the first three months of 2021, making up 2.6 percent of those employed in the UK.
Additionally, Collective Benefits noted some of the recent falls in self-employed numbers (from 4,375,000 at the end of last year to 4,345,000 in the three months to March 2021) was caused by people reclassifying themselves as ‘workers’, despite being in the same job.
On top of this, temporary employed, who Collective Benefits argues could better be described as independent workers, accounted for 5.5 percent of the total employee workforce, accounting for 1.5 million people in the three months to March.
